Dear Descanso Families,
We’ve had a vibrant and engaging week here at Descanso Elementary, filled with unique experiences and memorable activities. Here’s a look at all the wonderful things that happened this week:
XO Therapy Ranch Visit: We had the pleasure of welcoming XO Therapy Ranch to our school, where they provided horse therapy for a select group of kids. This unique experience was both therapeutic and educational, and we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with XO Therapy Ranch.
Incoming TK and Kinder Students: We were excited to meet our incoming TK and Kindergarten students from Pine Valley Preschool. They visited our classrooms and got a sneak peek of where they will be next year. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they explored their future learning environment.
Whole School Picture and Ricky the Redhawk: On Wednesday, we gathered for a whole school picture and were thrilled to be visited by Ricky the Redhawk for the first time. The students loved interacting with our school mascot, making the day even more special.
CalFire Visit: On Thursday, CalFire visited our school to show students the fire equipment and engines. The highlight for many was getting to spray water from the hoses! It was an educational and fun experience, giving students insight into the important work that firefighters do.
Field Trips:
- Mrs. Demink’s Class: Mrs. Demink’s class enjoyed a fantastic field trip to Old Town, where they learned about the rich history and cultural heritage of the area.
- Mrs. Walker’s Class: Mrs. Walker’s class had an exhilarating field trip to iFly, experiencing the thrill of indoor skydiving and learning about the science of flight.
Book Fair: All week long, we hosted the Book Fair, giving students the chance to browse and purchase a wide variety of books. It was wonderful to see the excitement on their faces as they discovered new books to read. Thank you to all our volunteers who made this experience possible!
Memorial Day Weekend: A reminder that this is a three-day weekend in observance of Memorial Day. There will be no school on Monday, May 27th. Enjoy the long weekend with your families.
Return on Tuesday: We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, May 28th. Sixth graders, please be ready and packed for 6th grade camp. Make sure to bring everything you need for this exciting adventure!

SUN Bucks: A New Summer Food Program!
Starting this summer, you can buy more food for your children with California SUN Bucks, also called Summer-EBT. SUN Bucks works just like CalFresh, but for the summer.
Children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application or an Alternative Income Form, or get CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal, are automatically enrolled. You don't need to do anything to sign up.
SUN Bucks provides $40 per month for food for June, July and August 2024 ($120 total). If Parents need to enroll in CalFresh they can find the links on the SUN Bucks website linked below.

The 6th grade recently completed reading the novel Holes and had the exciting opportunity to watch the movie. Ms. Dunn added a creative touch to the experience by providing theme-based snacks!
