Board Member Corner

Board Clerk Shelley Clark has been busy with District presentations and local meetings. Last week, Trustee Clark attended a Town of Danville Council meeting, joining local business owners to share how PG&E power outages have affected schools and businesses over the last few months. KTVU covered the meeting, including Shelley’s comments to the council.

Additionally, Clark and Board President Rachel Hurd teamed up to present important information to the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF) board and their affiliates about funding challenges facing SRVUSD in the near future with the expiration of the parcel tax and one-time COVID funds from the State, which both expire in 2025. Our students benefit from the incredible support of SRVEF and SRVCPTA and the work they do alongside our district leaders to ensure student growth and success.

Success Reimagined: Out and About with Dr. Malloy

This week Dr. Malloy spent time at Alamo Elementary, Montair Elementary, and San Ramon Valley High School. It’s always a highlight of the week to spend time with students and staff! Montair students impressed Dr. Malloy with their collaboration and leadership skills while working in small groups. At Alamo, third-grade students demonstrated math skills and shared with Dr. Malloy their love of reading mysteries and storytelling in their writing. Second-grade students in Ms. Flores’ class enjoyed hands-on learning while sketching or building their vision for what a safe wildlife crossing might look like. What a great example of deep learning!

From the Newsroom

As SRVUSD focuses on the Learner Profile and preparing students to thrive and excel in post-high school endeavors, Cal High alum Rahul Bir (Class of '22) models the essential qualities that we aspire for students to possess upon graduation. In this week’s Newsroom article, learn how he founded AwesomeSTEAM.org as an educational resource solution for teachers and students.

School Highlight: Deep Learning and Innovation in Action

Teaching and learning can be done in so many wonderful ways - even by means of a float deployed in the Southern Ocean! Thanks to the creativity and collaboration of science educators in SRVUSD, many of our students are learning about changes in the climate and the ocean by sponsoring a float through the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling project and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

Last year Alexandra Boitor from Stone Valley Middle School attended the Adopt-a-Float training in Washington. She and her SVMS colleague, Teresa Butler-Doran, led a professional development opportunity for other K-12 teachers to learn more about ocean monitoring and the work of local scientists. Several SRVUSD educators opted to adopt a float including Alissa Dreon from Dougherty Valley High School.

Ms. Dreon’s lucky students now have their very own float, which deployed in the Southern Ocean last week. It will provide live biochemical data that students will analyze and track. Students even got to design the artwork (a Wildcat, of course) for their sponsored float!

Bright Spots

Our Cal High marching band put on a great show at a recent Friday evening football game. We are so proud of the collaborative effort of staff and the resilience of students to get the marching band up and running this year. Way to go, Grizzlies - you really are a bright spot for all of us this week!

Engage With Us and Our Community!

  • Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Committee Seeks Members
The District is launching the development of the 3-year Local Control Accountability Plan (2024 - 2027), a State-required action and expenditure plan for educational programming aligned to state-identified priorities.  The committee membership will be composed of staff, students, parents, and community members.
Interested individuals should complete this brief survey by September 22. The committee will be limited to approximately 30 representatives.  If interest is greater than available slots, selection will be based on ensuring a broad representation from across the district.
  • Grading and Assessment Reform Committee Seeks Parents and Student Members for the 2023-2024 school year to continue our work around grading and assessment practices. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 27 after school. Please email Tami Castelluccio at tcastelluccio@srvusd.net if you would like to join us this year. Questions?
