I hope that everyone had a restful Labor Day weekend and is ready for our second month of school!
Last week Mrs. Helmer, Mr. Guerena, and I visited each Advisory classroom to talk with students about our shared community expectations that included - but was not limited to - device/technology expectations, tardy policy, and our expectations/rules around discrimination and hate language. Each student has had multiple opportunities to understand that there is no room for hate and discrimination in our school community; words and action of hate and discrimination will never be a joke at WRMS. Next week is Everyone is Welcome Week, where students will continue to engage in conversations in their Advisory class about inclusivity and respect for all learners on our campus and in the world around them. If you haven’t already accessed the family resources for talking with your child about this, please be sure to click here & here to review those now. When our students see that we are doing this work together, our school community grows stronger.
Another area of strength for WRMS is your generosity with the time and financial donations you have contributed this year and over the years. Volunteering on campus during your child’s lunch, in the classroom, or as a chaperone is a great way to spend your child’s middle school years. And with the financial donations we have received in the past through EdFund, we have been able to purchase much needed classroom technology, including upgraded classroom projectors, highly engaging tech software, offer a variety of electives, expanded music program, and lower the class size average - much of this is what sets WRMS aside from all other schools. In order to sustain this educational experience for our students, we rely on your EdFund donations; if you haven’t already donated, please consider donating any dollar amount here. Every contribution makes a difference for every learner on our campus.
As a reminder, we have two days off this month - Monday 9/25 and Tuesday 9/26. It’ll be a nice way to start the last week of September, so make sure you plan ahead for these two days! Have a great day! |

| Hello Families,
The first month of school has gone by quickly. The students are doing a great job at following school rules and have been incredibly polite. It is wonderful to see their smiling faces! I wanted to focus my communication this month on drop-off and pick-up procedures. Please pay attention to the staff giving directions before and after school. We would like you to pull forward as far as possible before stopping to quickly let your child out or in the car. When you pull forward and make sure you are behind a stopped car, it helps with the flow of traffic and gets your student to class in a timely manner. In addition, please make sure your child gets in and out on the right side of the car and uses the crosswalks. This will allow them to avoid traffic and remain safe.
We have been visiting advisory classes to discuss school rules with students. Our focus has been on following the device policy, cleaning up at lunch, and respecting all students on campus. It was explained to students that calling someone by their name is one way to show respect. Addressing one another by name might appear to be a straightforward practice, but it carries profound significance. It is a reflection of the value we place on acknowledging each individual's identity and worth. I hope you were able to spend some time as a family over the Labor Day weekend! Thank you! Christine Helmer |

Advisory / Tutorials
Students are responsible for signing up in advance for Wednesday and Thursday Tutorials. They should check their schedule in the Student Portal everyday to ensure they are attending the correct Tutorial. If the student does not attend their assigned tutorial they will be marked absent. If they have gone to a class other than their assigned tutorial, it is the student's responsibility to have that teacher email school attendance. Parents are not able to clear these absences.

|
| Arriving late to school:
Students arriving to school 5 minutes after the bell rings to their first class period must sign in at the attendance office before going to class. If a student arrives to school 30 minutes after their school day has started, a parent note or phone call is required (p. 10 WRMS Student Handbook) |

If a student is to be dismissed before the end of the day, a note must be presented to the office before school begins. The parent/guardian is then required to to sign-out at the attendance office at the time of departure. Read the entire policy on p. 11 of the WRMS Student Handbook. |
|
|
Tardies:
Students who arrive to class after the bell rings for any of their class periods will be considered and marked tardy for that class. Accumulated tardies within the quarter will receive the following consequences: The 5th tardy will result in a lunch detention
The 8th tardy will result in an after school detention 10 tardies or more may result in a Saturday School
Please see the WRMS Student Handbook / Planner (p. 10-11) for more information regarding our tardy policy. Please remember that the only absences that are excused are illnesses and medical/dental appointments.

National Literacy Month
San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of September as National Literacy Month. The schools of SRVUSD stand firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students’ future academic, professional, and personal success. We are committed to providing the highest quality evidence-based instructional materials, screening and diagnostic tools, interventions, and supports so that every student becomes a proficient and engaged reader, writer, speaker, and listener.
SRVUSD encourages engagement with parents and caregivers so they can support literacy at home and enhance opportunities for exploration, fun, and in support of academic achievement. Citizenship Awareness Month
San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of September as Citizenship Awareness Month. It is important that our students understand the basic principles of democracy and what it means to be an American citizen. Young people can play a critical role in our democracy by helping to choose the people who will lead us and by voicing their opinions on the issues that are important to them.
Students are encouraged to participate in the democratic process through voter education programs and involvement in civic engagement activities. District schools are encouraged to celebrate Constitution Day on September 17 and participate in California High School Voter Education Weeks during the last two weeks of September. National Hispanic Heritage Month
San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes September 15 - October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic and Latino Americans have made so many social, artistic, linguistic, and intellectual contributions to our society, the State of California, and our community. The California State Board of Education recognizes in its Multicultural Education Policy that each student needs an opportunity to understand the common humanity underlying all people.
During this month, all schools are directed to engage in activities to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month. |
Advocacy Day - Save the Date - Oct. 27 |

|
Get ready for Advocacy Day 2023! We've all faced many challenges in our schools and communities recently. Recognizing that, our focus this year will be on putting children and families first by encouraging connection, community, and civility. We are hoping to help our families and schools come together so we can all help our children thrive. Because after all... it's about the kids.

Fall conference week is Oct 2-6. In middle school, conferences are not held for every student. Teachers meet at each grade level prior to conferences to determine which families they would like to conference with. If you are invited for a team conference for your student, you will receive an invitation from the counseling office via email between Sept 22 and 26. There is also potential that an individual teacher would request a conference with you. If that is the case, the teacher will reach out to you directly to schedule this.

Thankfully, clinical psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy proclaims parents are, and have always been, good inside — and so are kids. (She has three.)
In her new book, "Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be," the expert known as the millennial "parenting whisperer" lays out a child-rearing approach that draws a distinction between identity and behavior. Here is an article and some tips from Dr. Becky Kennedy.
