| I wanted to share some information with you regarding our current budget situation, staffing, and enrollment. - This school year, we have lost 112 students from last school year, which equals roughly $1,300,000 in revenue. We have been directed to make budget reductions as we are in a structural deficit in order to have a positive budget.
- In March, The board approved a Fiscal Recovery Plan which outlined reducing the budget by roughly $3 million over two years.
-
Looking at the board-approved staff-to-student ratios by grade span of TK-3 (24:1) and 4-8 (30:1), we are one teacher over at SR and AE. RC started the year with a long-term substitute teacher that was not board-approved. We have too many teachers and not enough students. Typically, in these situations you would collapse classes and move teachers to the open unfilled teaching positions across the district.
-
Last Wednesday night, the AUSD Board of Trustees gave me, your Superintendent, direction to not collapse any classes and hire new teachers to fill the open positions at Alta Vista Community Charter School, EV Cain Middle School and add one additional kindergarten class at Rock Creek. This represents an approximate additional expense of $300,000.
-
Additionally, the Board approved continuing with hiring five rover substitutes to support the substitute teacher issue. This comes at a cost of about $250,000.
The motivation behind this decision is to cause as little disruption to students and families as possible |
