It was a pleasure for Trustee Shelley Clark to join Dr. Malloy and Christopher George on a visit today to California High School. In addition to walking around campus, they spent much of the time talking with a panel of wonderful teachers about their needs and perspectives. The rest of the time was spent talking with students and administrators listening to their ideas on how to expand and deepen the educational experiences available to students, to be available alongside the other amazing programs they already have in place, such as the Biomedical Pathway, iQuest and so many others.

Success Reimagined: Out and About with Dr. Malloy
|
This week Dr. Malloy visited three of our high schools: Dougherty Valley, San Ramon Valley, and Cal High. While each of these schools has its own unique culture, Dr. Malloy heard many shared insights and challenges from students and staff. Students discussed course options, managing stress, navigating school processes, and peer relationships. Staff shared ideas and thoughts about student well-being and providing safe conditions for student learning. To hear more about #SuccessReimagined happening in our high schools, watch Dr. Malloy’s messages linked above.

One of our Strategic Directions is the Culture of Responsiveness, where our goal is to effectively serve our partners by listening, responding promptly, changing practices when appropriate, and communicating the rationale for decisions, so students always remain the focus of our efforts. We don’t want you to forget to take the Culture of Responsiveness Survey. And we also want you to learn more about all of our family engagement efforts in our newest SRVUSD Newsroom article.

School Highlight: Deep Learning and Innovation in Action |
Deep learning was in full action earlier this week at Stone Valley Middle School and Congressman Mark DeSaulnier was there to experience it firsthand. The Congressman visited the campus as part of his Educational Listening Tour. Principal Justin White and Dr. Malloy led the Congressman through classrooms, followed by a student panel and engaging roundtable discussion with Trustees Rachel Hurd and Jesse vanZee, union partners, staff members, and parent leaders. When asked what they like about school, one of the students shared: “I like being safe and that you can rely on students and teachers here.”
One of the most intriguing lessons observed by the group was English teacher, Mr. Rasch’s classroom. He was digging deep with students to analyze the lyrics of af Billy Joel song, Vienna, during their weekly “Tuesday Tunes.” As they analyzed and discussed the lyrics “Slow down you're doing fine/You can't be everything you want to be/Before your time” - the students talked about how they all have these dreams and goals in life, but it takes time for them to happen; they can't rush through life, but need to be patient and enjoy what is in front of them instead of worrying so much about the future. It is a weekly activity all of Mr. Rasch’s students talk about and it was wonderful to see deep learning and #SuccessReimagined happening at Stone Valley!

In this edition of Bright Spots, we want to brighten your day by sharing a bit about Neil Chandran, a sophomore at Monte Vista High. Neil is not only passionate about tennis, but about providing access to tennis to kids who may not always have the opportunity. This is how he got involved in ACEing Autism, which has a mission to “Connect children with autism through unique tennis programs, and to develop and advance proven methods to positively impact the children, families and communities we serve”. Neil got involved as a student tennis coach with ACEing Autism last year, and decided it was time to bring the program to the San Ramon Valley. Neil is now a Program Director for ACEing Autism for our Danville/Alamo community. He ran the first clinics in the area alongside peers from MVHS and SRVHS in January/February, and plans to do more!
