January 13, 2023

Dear SRVUSD Community,

Welcome back! We hope these first four days of school in 2023 were wonderful!

While we were all on winter break, our incredible team of maintenance and custodial staff were our heroes. Everyone knows it’s often the behind the scenes work that makes it all happen. Our Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Stella Kemp, recently shared that “with the tremendous rainfall and winds that have come through the area over the past two weeks, our Maintenance & Operations, Custodial and Facilities teams have been working many long hours sandbagging, clearing drains of leaves, clearing mud flows, and ensuring that our electrical/server rooms are water tight in order to make sure that classrooms are ready for students on Tuesday.” Next time you run into one of these dedicated staff members, we encourage you to take a moment to thank them!

Friday Minute with Dr. Malloy

To kick off 2023, Dr. Malloy is starting a series of weekly videos for the community. Watch today’s video to hear how he plans to share insights about our Strategic Directions.

SRVUSD California Distinguished Schools

Nine of SRVUSD’s Elementary Schools have been selected for the prestigious 2023 California Distinguished Schools Program: Alamo, Greenbrook, Hidden Hills, John Baldwin, Live Oak, Neil Armstrong, Sycamore Valley, Vista Grande and Walt Disney.

Schools were selected by the California Department of Education and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond shared in a press release that “the exceptional elementary schools recognized this year are illustrative of the hard work, dedication, and resilience shown by educators and schools across the state after communities struggled for multiple years with urgent effects to physical and mental health and unprecedented challenges to delivering education.” Congratulations to the dedicated staff and students at these sites!

Board Member Corner

Our Board of Education Trustees regularly visit schools and classrooms around the district. Prior to the winter break, Board President Rachel Hurd visited John Baldwin and Quail Run Elementary Schools. She shared that these were wonderful visits with great opportunities to observe reading instruction, intervention, and deep learning in action. Rachel was able to talk with John Baldwin’s Principal Joe Romagna about their Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) and how their grade-level Common Learning Time works. “During a visit to Karen Lepke's 1st grade classroom, we saw incredible language arts instruction, with students practicing key skills as they reviewed vowel patterns they've been learning, focused on their new "OW/OU" sound, and reviewed their "tricky" words.” Rachel also visited Kristy Candelaria's 2nd & 3rd grade classroom and engaged with students working in pairs on contractions. Rachel shared that she “couldn't resist taking a photo of the Sound Wall and Vowel Valley… I can't wait to go back and see more!”

From the Newsroom

This week we are sharing two SRVUSD Newsroom stories! The first newsroom story highlights Monte Vista High School student Aarnav Verma. As a student member of the State PTA Board of Managers, Aarnav has discovered his passion for effecting positive change for California students. Learn more about his journey and how financial literacy, amongst other things, are a focus of his work.

Our second newsroom story expresses our appreciation for our law enforcement agencies and highlights Officer Ray Hamilton, who recently received San Ramon Police Department (SRPD) Officer of the Year award!

School Highlight: Deep Learning and Innovation in Action at Bollinger Canyon

Ms. Wright’s 5th graders from Bollinger Canyon Elementary recently used creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems! Students created products to aid in ending the global water crisis. They pitched their ideas a la ‘Shark Tank’ to a panel, which included Board of Education member Susanna Ordway, representatives from Educational Services, as well as Assistant Principal Kelsey Loecher and Principal Christine Offerman. Susanna shared that she was “blown away by the product pitches.” She also shared that it was impressive to see how the students’ presentations were “well researched and supported with facts and information, and their products and solutions embedded with both creativity and logistics.” This type of project truly exemplifies the academic mindset and passion for lifelong learning we know all of our students strive for!

School Websites - CareLine Button and Staff Directory Icon

As a part of our commitment to continuous quality improvement of our new website, we have relocated the CareLine button on the homepage for every school, and it is now the top left “square” titled “CareLine Reports.” We also have all of the CareLine direct links on the district page for each school.

Please note that CareLine tips are not routinely monitored when school is not in session, including all school holidays such as winter break. If there is ever an emergency, please call 911 or contact one of the resources for support listed when you click on the CareLine link for your school.

We also want to make sure everyone remembers that if you scroll a bit further down the page on any individual school website, you will find the six high-traffic icons! These links give you direct access to web pages we know our community accesses regularly, including the school site staff directory icon shown below.
